Senate Democrats Play Politics With ObamaCare

Senate Democrats have opposed delaying ObamaCare for one year. Senate Democrats have opposed delaying the individual mandate for one year. Senate Democrats have opposed delaying the indivdiual mandate penalties for one year.  Under the law, individuals are supposed to complete the exchange enrollment process by February 15, 2014 to ensure they have health insurance by the March 31st deadline. But with the failure of healthcare.gov, there is a chance that many will not be able to complete the process in time.

So Senate Democrats are now playing politics asking for a few weeks delay of the ObamaCare’s enrollment deadline. They opposed all kinds of delays that would have mattered so they are asking for a delay that doesn’t matter much at all. The Senators who are trying to protect their “six” include:

AK: Sen. Mark Begich (see here)

AR: Sen. Mark Pryor (see here).

CA: Sen. Diane Feinsten.

CO: Sens. Mike Bennet and Mark Udall (see here).

LA: Sen. Mary Landrieu (see here).

NH: Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (see here).

NC: Sen. Kay Hagen (see here).

WV: Sen. Joe Manchin (see here).

The most comical thing about this entire episode is that Democrats are blaming Republicans for the reason the health care law isn’t working properly. Readers will note Republicans tried for months earlier this year to delay ObamaCare, including the mandate, but Senate Democrats and President Obama refused to talk. In effect, Republicans were throwing Democrats a life line which the Democrats refused and now the Democrats are blaming the Republicans. There is no shame among Senate Democrats.

Even NPR Acknowledges You Might Not Be Able to Keep Your Insurance

On August 23, National Public Radio ran a piece explaining that President Obama broke his promise that “if you like your insurance you can keep it.” From NPR’s transcript: “Well, it turns out not everyone can. When Obamacare goes into full swing this January, millions of people who buy insurance on their own will need to look for new plans. That’s because many have bare-bones plans that doesn’t meet the law’s requirements.” The piece explains that people will be forced to buy more expensive policies just to comply with the mandate.

Attorneys General Concerned About Obamacare Identity Theft

According to Politico,

“Thirteen state attorneys general wrote to Secretary Sebelius yesterday to say they’re worried that her agency isn’t adequately protecting the privacy of those shopping in the insurance exchanges. Among their worries: that navigators and other assisters aren’t being trained well enough to protect personal data.”

“‘When the exchanges begin enrollment, various ‘navigators,’ assister, application counselor and other consumer outreach programs will begin inputting consumers’ private data into insurance applications to help consumers enroll in health insurance plans,” the letter says. “We take very seriously the privacy of our state consumers and believe that your agency’s current guidance regarding these groups suffers numerous deficiencies.'”

ObamaCare Exposes Exchange Users to Identity Theft

According to a report form Reuters, the HHS Inspector General reports that the ObamaCare exchange website – healthcare.gov – where individuals will have to enter a lot of personal, private information is at risk for data security breaches.  Reuters writes:

“The federal government is months behind in testing data security for the main pillar of Obamacare: allowing Americans to buy health insurance on state exchanges due to open by October 1. The missed deadlines have pushed the government’s decision on whether information technology security is up to snuff to exactly one day before that crucial date, the Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general said in a report.”

 And

“The most likely serious security breach would be identity theft, in which a hacker steals the social security numbers and other information people provide when signing up for insurance. The inspector general’s report, released without fanfare last Friday, found that the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services or CMS – the agency within HHS that is running Obamacare – had set a May 13 deadline for its contractor to deliver a plan to test the security of the crucial information technology component.”

Congress Gets Special ObamaCare Treatment

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) is effectively the HR office of the federal government. Yesterday, OPM announced that they would exempt Congress and high level executive branch officials from ObamaCare. Under ObamaCare, Congress and other federal officials were no longer eligible for the federal employee health care.  They could, however, obtain their insurance through the ObamaCare exchanges. If their income was low enough, they would receive the subsidies, if not they would be paying for their premiums 100% out of pocket.  That’s what the law said but today OPM announced that Congress would get special benefits – the federal government would pay for their health insurance regardless of what the law says. In effect, Congress just received special treatment.
