ObamaCare – the Kid No Other Kid Wants to Play With

If ObamaCare was Barack Obama’s child, he would cleaerly be the kid no other kids wanted to play with. It seems more and more insurers are refusing to play ball with the health law. For example, the Los Angeles Times opinion page noted last week that California’s largest small business insurer – Wellpoint Anthem Blue Cross – has decided it will not participate in California’s ObamaCare insurance exchange. Anthem writes nearly 1/3rd of all small business policies in California. This announcement follows on the heels of a previous announcement that UnitedHealthAetna and Cigna had already opted not to participate in California’s exchange.  This is not, as commentators have said, good news for consumers.

That wasn’t the extent of the bad news either.  Proving ObamaCare is the least liked kid on the block, nine hospitals have decided to withdraw from ObamaCare’s Accountable Care Organization (ACO) pilot program. President Obama has stated that this law would reduce healthcare costs. None of the nine that are dropping out produced any cost savings in the “pioneer” plan.

ObamaCare Train Already off the Rails

You know that looming trainwreck that is ObamaCare? Well, federal officials responsible for implementing the law are admiting the train has already gone off the rails. Seems the exchanges won’t be ready, the technological implementation is behind schedule and hasn’t been properly tested.

Alan Duncan, an auditor with the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, said testing the system “will be difficult to complete” by the October 1st deadline and that “The lack of adequate testing could result in significant delays and errors in accepting and processing… applications for [ObamaCare’s] health insurance coverage.”  Yikes.

Special Treatment for IRS Employees?

The IRS will have the power to monitor you and even force people to buy insurance or pay a tax. This all centers around ObamaCare’s individual mandate and the health insurance exchanges. In a bit of cruel irony, however, IRS employees want a total and free pass from having to deal with the exchanges themselves.

States Near Deadline to Implement ObamaCare

Politico reports that states are nearing the deadline to opt-in to PPACA’s exchange system.  Politico states:

“Friday is the day when states are due to declare whether they’ll partner with the White House to build Affordable Care Act health insurance exchanges. After that, the sprint to the finish begins.”
“To be clear, this isn’t just another bureaucratic deadline: What states choose to do with the Obamacare exchanges has long-term implications for the success of the landmark health care law, not to mention political consequences for the governors and state legislatures that choose to either carry out the law or turn over the keys to the federal government in building exchanges.”

State Exchange Scorecard

The Tea Party Patriots have a very concise map that details the status of states opting out of ObamaCare exchanges. Their map can be viewed here. Kudos to them for the work on this.

The IRS Rule About Exchanges Ignores the Law

Are you aware that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is attempting to implement ObamaCare but in ways that ignores how Congress actually wrote the law. The IRS is attempting to extend ObamaCare tax credits to federal health insurance exchanges despite the clear langauge of the law that prevents this. The IRS is attempting to create a trillion dollar entitlement program without any legal or statutory authority to allow this.

Michael Cannon and Jonathan Adler have written a well-constructed critique of how the IRS has vioalted the Constitution in their attempt to ignore the law. Read their commentary here.

Michael Cannon Says All States Need to Know About Why to Skip Setting Up Exchanges

Michael Cannon of The CATO Institute details how the ObamaCare health insurance exchanges are the gateway to federal control of healthcare. Despite the fact that states are not required to set up exchanges, many states are doing so anyway (even states suing the Feds on the grounds that ObamaCare is unconstitutional are taking steps to set up exchanges).
